CO-CHAIRS

Claudio Sassanelli
Department of Mechanics, Mathematics and Management, Politecnico di Bari
Italy

Brief Bio
Claudio Sassanelli is Assistant Professor and Tenure-Track researcher at Politecnico di Bari, Department of Mechanics, Mathematics and Management, and Senior Research Fellow at École des Ponts Business School of École des Ponts ParisTech. He received his two master degrees in Management and Civil Engineering from Politecnico di Bari, respectively in 2010 and 2013, and his PhD in Management, Economics and Industrial Engineering from Politecnico di Milano in 2017, also holding visiting researcher positions at Tokyo Metropolitan University (TMU) and Universidade de São Paulo (USP). He has a 10-year experience in research on Circular Economy, specifically addressing to Product Lifecycle Management (PLM), Product-Service System (PSS), Design for X (DfX) approaches, and Industry 4.0/5.0 paradigm. To advance these research domains, he manages special issues in international journals as guest editor, and disseminates his research being co-author of more than 100 publications in international journals, international conference proceedings and book chapters. He is member of the IFIP WG 5.1 and accepted candidate member of IFIP WF 5.7. He carried out teaching activities in courses on production systems (environmental management, design and management, industrial technologies), and quality design and management, at Politecnico di Bari, Politecnico di Milano, SUPSI and LIUC Università Cattaneo.
Concetta Semeraro
Department of Industrial and Management Engineering, University of Sharjah
United Arab Emirates

Brief Bio
Dr. Concetta Semeraro is Assistant Professor at the University of Sharjah, United Arab Emirates (UAE) in Industrial Engineering and Engineering Management Department. She got her double Ph.D. in June 2020 in Industrial Engineering at Polytechnical University of Bari (Italy) and in Computer Science at University of Lorraine (France), SUMMA CUM LAUDE (FIRST CLASS HONORS). She was postdoc at the University of Lorraine (France). She obtained her Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Industrial and Management Engineering at Polytechnic University of Bari (Italy). She is an expert on Digital Twin, Industry 4.0 and 5.0, Modelling and Simulation, Data Analysis, Machine learning and Artificial Intelligence to improve processes' efficiency and smartness. Her main research areas are: Digital Twin design and implementation on manufacturing processes, energy storage and renewable energy systems.

SCOPE

Industry 5.0, grounded on the pillars of human-centricity, resilience, and sustainability, integrates advanced technologies to develop intelligent and adaptable manufacturing environments. Among them, digital twins (i.e., a virtual emulation of actual physical entities through a digital model) enable real-time monitoring, simulation, and optimization of systems, enhancing operational efficiency and reducing resource consumption. In particular, digital twin technology (either alone or also integrated with other technologies and tools) provides exceptional opportunities to advance industrial systems and practices under an Industry 5.0 fashion. It can support the welfare of operators fostering their cognitive capabilities, enable more resilient data-driven processes inside organizations and throughout the entire supply chain, and also foster the reaching of a better efficiency in the use of resources and in systems operations, driving a sustainable shift towards circular economy. This session wants to explore how the digital twin technology could contribute to the exploitation of cognitive processes to address the Industry 5.0 concept and applications, with a major focus on its potential to drive sustainability.
